For everyone involved, including the clubhouse staffs.

An eagle-eyed Broncos fan caught this mistake during the pregame. A rogue G found itself before the L in McLaughlin’s name.

Maybe there was a fumble in the handoff.

But let’s put some respect on Jaleel McLaughlin’s name.

The short-statured (5-foot-7) running back made a big (not just a long) name for himself after starting at Notre Dame College in Ohio. After running for a school-record 302 yards in his first career game, he would pile up 2,421 yards as a freshman. As a sophomore, he’d add another 2,316 yards.

McLaughlin would move on to Youngstown State for his final few seasons where he’d continue to pile up the yards. He would run for 691 yards in the 2020 COVID spring season, 1,139 during the fall and 1,588 in his senior season.

He’d finish his career with 8,166 yards on 1,250 carries and 79 touchdowns, finishing as the all-time leading rusher in college football history.

After such a prolific college career, hopefully this isn’t the moment this undrafted free agent is remembered for in the NFL.

Diamondbacks to bring back throwback uniforms for 25th anniversary celebration https://arizonasports.com/story/3530859/d-backs-wearing-throwback-uniforms-anniversary/ https://arizonasports.com/story/3530859/d-backs-wearing-throwback-uniforms-anniversary/#respond Fri, 11 Aug 2023 13:45:03 +0000 https://arizonasports.com/?p=3530859

PHOENIX — Arizona Diamondbacks fans will get to see Corbin Carroll don the purple and teal pinstripes in a game at Chase Field for the first time, and Lourdes Gurriel Jr.’s hair will finally match the uniform.

The D-backs are celebrating their 25th anniversary this weekend during a three-game series against the San Diego Padres and will wear their 2001 vest uniforms in each game.

The jerseys and purple hats were hung up at each locker in the clubhouse after Wednesday’s game.

The D-backs played their first season in 1998 and alumni from different eras including the 2001 World Series will be in the building. Randy Johnson, Jay Bell and Tony Womack, along with regulars Luis Gonzalez and Mark Grace, are set to attend.

The first 15,000 fans at Saturday’s game will receive a replica jersey. Longtime radio voice Greg Schulte will throw the first pitch, and trumpeter Jesse Maguire will perform the National Anthem.

Nike and MLB agreed to a rule where teams would wear four uniforms plus their City Connect jerseys this year, but an exception was made for the anniversary.

The D-backs have not worn their purple and teals since the 2021 season.

Cardinals’ Kyler Murray among top 5 NFL players in youth apparel sales this offseason https://arizonasports.com/story/3530453/cardinals-kyler-murray-among-top-5-nfl-players-in-youth-apparel-sales-this-offseason/ https://arizonasports.com/story/3530453/cardinals-kyler-murray-among-top-5-nfl-players-in-youth-apparel-sales-this-offseason/#respond Sun, 06 Aug 2023 21:55:21 +0000 https://arizonasports.com/?p=3530453

Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray was one of the NFL’s most popular players in merchandise sales this offseason, especially with youth apparel.

From March 1 to May 31, Murray ranked No. 12 in the league in licensed player merchandise sales and was in the top five for youth apparel, according to the NFL Player’s Association.

Items considered were jerseys, T-shirts, hoodies, bobbleheads, plush toys, socks, face coverings, headbands, figurines, wall decals, backpacks, pennants, photos, drinkware, pet products and more.

The top five sellers were Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers, Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow, Dallas Cowboys linebacker Micah Parsons and Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce.

Murray was one of the league’s biggest risers at 36 spots from last year. No other Cardinals players cracked the NFL’s top 50 in sales.

The sixth-year quarterback, Mahomes, Justin Jefferson, Rodgers and Justin Fields made up the top five in youth apparel sales.

The Cardinals unveiled a new set of uniforms in April after years of fans clamoring for a refresh. The last time Arizona overhauled its look was in 2005.

Murray will don the new red, white and black jerseys this upcoming season after his return from a torn ACL. He nor the team has put a specific timeline on his return to game action after he suffered the injury in Week 14.

The jerseys will feature the classic Eagle logo on the sleeve with large white numbers with a black trim.

The kelly green helmet will have silver Eagle wings stemming from either end of the forehead with a white trim.

Additionally, the white pants will have two think green stripes going down the legs. The team’s white socks will also have two horizontal stripes as well.

Philadelphia won three Super Bowls in the uniforms dating back to 1948, 1949 and 1960. The team has not worn the jerseys since current owner Jeffrey Lurie bought the team in 1996.

It was announced last year that teams would be allowed to bring in an alternate helmet, which Philadelphia used to bring back this design. It is still unknown when the team will debut the uniforms in 2023, though.

The Eagles are coming off a playoff run in 2022 that ended with a Super Bowl loss to the Kansas City Chiefs and have set very high expectations in the upcoming season for their play but as well as their style.

Who do you think has the best uniforms in the the NFL?

With the upcoming debut of the game uniforms for the Arizona Cardinals, the team and its players revealed another new look Friday at State Farm Stadium in Glendale: practice uniforms.

The clean red and white looks were surely one of the highlights for players in the first week of training camp.

The new practice uniforms are white and red, via Nike.

In April the team revealed three new versions of their game-day uniforms, which feature new takes on red, white and black with the same color pants.

The biggest change in the uniforms will be the all red jerseys with an “Arizona” displayed on the front. This will be the first time the state’s name has been depicted on the jersey.

The whites have a “modern flair,” with red numbers and names on the back. Additionally, the white helmets will have a larger Cardinal depicted with new shadows surrounding it.

The blacks complement the alternate helmets released last season with all black jerseys and red numbers and names.

Nike released photos of the shoes which feature olive green leather, white overlays and rose gold metallic swoosh.

Murray’s signature logo is present on the insoles of the shoes.

There is no announced release date yet for the Dunks, although Sneaker News reported they will drop around the holidays.

Murray signed with Nike ahead of the 2019 NFL Draft when he was selected No. 1 overall by Arizona.

This is not the first bit of Murray shoe news this year, as Nike came out with the latest edition of the Vapor Edge Pro 360 2 cleats in May to honor of Murray’s pink suit on draft night.

The Arizona State football team appears to be mixing old school with modern looks on its latest home uniforms.

ASU dropped a teaser of the new maroon and gold home jerseys Wednesday with four close-up shots.

The most revealing showed the numbers outlined in white, a throwback to ASU’s look in the past before it turned to black outlines.

The numbers were outlined in white from Danny White’s era to Jake Plummer to Rudy Carpenter.

The facemask was also white, unique for an ASU home look. The face masks have typically been maroon or gold in recent seasons with certain alternate exceptions.

A feature seen on many of the newest renditions of the uniform remains with the black outline of the Arizona state flag on the maroon jersey.

The Sun Devils will assuredly break out several looks by Adidas in Tempe this upcoming season. They have plenty of games to show off with eight at Sun Devil Stadium, starting Aug. 31 against Southern Utah in the season opener.

Their second game is a blackout night against Oklahoma State, while the Pac-12 opener vs. USC will be a maroon monsoon on Sept. 23.

Deandre Ayton reps Bahamas, Jamaica with new PE Puma shoes https://arizonasports.com/story/3528512/deandre-ayton-reps-bahamas-jamaica-with-new-pe-puma-shoes/ https://arizonasports.com/story/3528512/deandre-ayton-reps-bahamas-jamaica-with-new-pe-puma-shoes/#respond Wed, 19 Jul 2023 01:30:16 +0000 https://arizonasports.com/?p=3528512 (Twitter Photo/@PUMAHoops) (Twitter Photo/@PUMAHoops) (Twitter Photo/@PUMAHoops) (Twitter Photo/@PUMAHoops)

Phoenix Suns center Deandre Ayton’s newest shoes are two different colors that represent his home in the Bahamas and his mother’s birth country of Jamaica.

Ayton’s player edition Rise Nitro kicks from Puma were revealed on Tuesday, with Ayton explaining in a video that the meaning behind the shoes is to show off where he and his family hail from.

“I’m representing two strong-minded ethnicities, it’s just something I want to share and show the Caribbean that I’m truly representing them the best way I can,” Ayton said.

“My family, they’re like my peace, they’re like my sun.”

Ayton’s area code from the Bahamas is present on the shoes with the phrase, “#242 TO DA WORLD.”

“DominAyton” and “Bad Mon” are also printed on the shoes.

One shoe is Bahamian blue and yellow while the other is green and gold for Jamaica. They each don their respective nation’s flag on the back heel.

“Where I’m from I’m representing to the world, and I’m trying to give my best presentation,” Ayton said.

Ayton signed an endorsement deal with Puma in 2018 and an extension in 2021.

His RS-X Deandre released in 2019 paid homage to the Bahamas after Hurricane Dorian, and a chunk of the proceeds went to relief efforts.

He also donated $100,000 to various aid programs at the time.

Eyewitness News Bahamas reported on Tuesday that Ayton donated $10,000 to Junior Achievement Bahamas, a youth development organization.

New York Knicks forward R.J. Barrett and 2023 No. 3 overall pick Scoot Henderson also received Puma Nitro player edition shoes.

Don’t be Salty, Jarrod! Former D-back now 3rd for longest name https://arizonasports.com/story/3528428/dont-be-salty-jarrod-former-d-back-now-3rd-for-longest-name/ https://arizonasports.com/story/3528428/dont-be-salty-jarrod-former-d-back-now-3rd-for-longest-name/#respond Tue, 18 Jul 2023 16:00:49 +0000 https://arizonasports.com/?p=3528428 Jarrod Saltalamacchia’s place in baseball lore is quickly slipping.

According to MLB.com’s Sarah Langs, the former Arizona Diamondback now ranks 3rd all-time for longest name in Major League Baseball history.

In comes Christian Encarnacion-Strand, who made his Major League debut Monday for the Cincinnati Reds. The 23-year-old rookie has an outstanding 27 letters between his first and last name, establishing a new record for longest name (first and last) by a major leaguer. He also holds the record for longest last name with 18 letters, outpacing Simeon Woods Richardson by two.

Here’s a list where Saltalamacchia now ranks all-time:

1. Christian Encarnacion-Strand: 27 characters (2023 Reds)
2. Simeon Woods Richardson: 22 (2022 Twins)
3-T. Jarrod Saltalamacchia: 20 (2007 Braves)
3-T. Luis Alexander Basabe: 20 (2020 Giants)
3-T. Christian Bethancourt: 20 (2013 Braves)
3-T. Fautino De Los Santos: 20 (2011 A’s)
3-T. Valerio De Los Santos: 20 (1998 Brewers)
3-T. William VanLandingham: 20 (1994 Giants)
3-T. Theodore Breitenstein: 20 (1891 St. Louis Browns)

However, the clubhouse team wasn’t having nearly as much fun as the Reds’ Twitter followers on Monday, as they settled on just “Encarnacion” for the back of the the rookie’s jersey.

While he may be the first Encarnacion-Strand in club history, he’s still the third player to wear “Encarnacion” on his back, joining Juan and Edwin.

But when it comes to the back to our boy, the former D-back and 12-year pro, Saltalamacchia, there’s not much to be to Salty about: he’s got 110 career homers and a World Series ring.

With player stylists and Gucci collabs, MLB eyes a fresh look with younger fans https://arizonasports.com/story/3527955/mlb-assigns-d-backs-corbin-carroll-stylist-all-star-game/ https://arizonasports.com/story/3527955/mlb-assigns-d-backs-corbin-carroll-stylist-all-star-game/#respond Tue, 11 Jul 2023 17:49:16 +0000 https://arizonasports.com/?p=3527955

SEATTLE (AP) — Ronald Acuña Jr. topped off a Barbiecore ’fit with a jeweled chain of his own likeness. Adley Rutschman leaned more “Kenergy” in a leafy gold ensemble. Though there were some flashy standouts, many of the suits were safe and serious at Major League Baseball’s red carpet show on Tuesday.

The event came hours before the All-Star Game and featured baseball’s top players strutting through Seattle’s famous Pike Place Market with their spouses, kids and moms in tow, and giving their best looks to the hundreds of adoring fans gathered.

Yet what was really on display was MLB’s quest for the crown of cool.

The fan-friendly event is as much an homage to baseball’s iconic place in street style — from the game’s signature caps and jerseys to the classic tees — as it is an indication that MLB is increasingly staking its claim on fashion as an entry to new audiences and pop culture reverence.

“MLB gave me a stylist for this game,” said Corbin Carroll, a 22-year-old Seattle native turned Arizona Diamondbacks’ breakout rookie. “The outfit’s kind of cool. Definitely, it’s not something I would pick out for myself, but I’m kind of excited to show that off.”

Like a good many Gen Zer — which includes those born in the late 1990s and early 2000s — Carroll described his off-duty style as more casual than high fashion: “Athleisure, not too many logos, plain, a nice good fit.”

On the red carpet — which was actually a hot magenta pink — Carroll stuck with neutral colors, wearing a white blazer, black shirt and tan pants, styled with Nikes, sunglasses and a mullet.

But it’s no coincidence that MLB is tapping the young, mixed-race player as a style ambassador for its All-Star Red Carpet Show.

The league has for years suffered from the same audience problem. There is a perception that baseball is so steeped in American tradition that it may be a stodgy game targeted to old-timers — namely, white fans — who still track scores by hand in the stands.

“Sometimes perception becomes reality, but it’s just never been accurate. Look at the young people — they’ve always been here,” said Noah Garden, MLB’s chief revenue officer. “We always want to attract younger fans. It’s the foundation of any business.”

So MLB has been trying to liven up its image for years, watching with wonder as the NBA’s cultural dominance grew alongside the basketball stars who have been cemented as style kings among celebrity athletes, along with their sneakers, suits and streetwear.

The NBA is the No. 1 brand preference for Gen Z across sports institutions, said Brandon Brown, a sports management professor at New York University, in part because the game and its savvy players are so heavily tied to urban hip-hop culture and self-representation — things this generation so identifies with.

Not since the Seattle Mariners’ own Hall of Famer Ken Griffey Jr. — with his signature and very ’90s backwards baseball cap — has there truly been an MLB player seen as a cross-cultural superstar who could make a splash with just his outfits, Brown said.

“He (was in) a bunch of different mediums to speak to a multitude of audiences,” Brown said. “MLB is probably still looking for their next superstar in modern culture.”

Today, baseball officials are keen to encourage their players to shine in the same way, too, knowing the ticket to loyal fans can be found off the field — perhaps at a much-hyped red carpet show built to pop on social media.

“It’s a really important event. The players really embrace it, too,” Garden said. “It’s to highlight our best players and bringing them closer to the fans.”

Among the league’s most fashion-forward players: Mariners star Julio Rodríguez, 22, whose red carpet outfit for Tuesday was handmade in Italy and paid tribute to Seattle. The reigning American League Rookie of the Year works with a personal shopper.

“What do you think about when you think about Seattle? You think a little bit about the trees, the lakes and all those things — the beautiful summer. So, it’s going to go towards that,” Rodríguez said.

The look, complete with a pair of exclusive Alexander McQueen sneakers, was crafted by Ethan Weisman, the founder of Pantheon Limited Custom Clothiers. Sports fans have certainly seen Weisman’s looks before. He’s the man behind Ezekiel Elliott’s head-turning crop-top tuxedo at the 2016 NFL draft.

Garden said MLB’s forays into fashion are not really about merchandising revenue, as its high-end collaborations with the likes of Gucci don’t sell for volume.

“There’s very limited quantities. It allows us to reach out to a very specific part of the fan base,” Garden said. “It’s a closer association with non-traditional brands.”

It’s such a coveted supply that some players have even called the front office asking for a piece of MLB’s limited edition Gucci collection, Garden said.

So lest you believe the unstylish rumors, there actually has been many short stops in baseball’s history with fashion.

There’s been official collaborations with brands ranging from preppy Ralph Lauren to niche streetwear label Supreme. Baseball’s long-established role as fashion inspiration is thanks in part to the league’s pioneering sale of replica jerseys. It was a socially-conscious decision to celebrate the league-wide No. 42 jersey on Jackie Robinson Day.

And the strategic licensing of the famous New York Yankees logo globally has arguably, to borrow the words of iconic rapper Jay-Z, “made the Yankee hat more famous than a Yankee can.” In fact, MLB’s fashion efforts are a major part of their international marketing plan, lately leaning into France’s affinity for fashion to break into the wider European market.

“What they’re tapping into is a kind of a cultural capital that’s not financial. It’s about the fans. It’s about nostalgia,” said Erin Corrales-Diaz, a Toledo Museum of Art curator who wrote a book about the baseball jersey and the sport’s influence on fashion. “Fashion has always been a part of the sport, even if it hasn’t always been articulated.”

Even so, MLB may still have its work cut out for it as several All-Star players acknowledged they were less than fluent in fashion ahead of Tuesday’s show. Houston Astros’ Kyle Tucker and Los Angeles Dodger Clayton Kershaw were among the many ballplayers sporting the safest of suits and who said they weren’t big into fashion.

“It’s not my forte,” Kershaw said.

Carroll of the Diamondbacks also flashed a shy smile describing his first time working with a stylist and first time doing any red carpet event.

“I might be more nervous for that than the game,” Carroll said.

Sacramento brought modern twists to familiar designs, with both the Association and Icon jerseys featuring the classic “Kings” script that was once synonymous with the then-Kansas City Kings and harkens back to the Rochester Royals’ look from 1951-52.

It also mirrors the script on the way-out-there gold and purple uniforms the team sported in the early 2000s.

Additionally, Sacramento is taking a less-is-more-approach to the color purple, with black taking centerstage just as it did in the Kings’ rebrand away from blue and red in 1994 up until 2002.

You gotta feed the Beam somehow, right?

As for the Statement edition, the Kings took inspiration from Sacramento’s checkered, two-tone uniform of the mid-90s that now includes purple fading to black. The checkerboard on the sides of the uniform also got a facelift from black and white to black and purple.

The “Kings” script is reminiscent of the 1994 rebrand, though also includes the word “Sacramento.”

“We are excited to unveil a new collection of uniforms that salutes the team’s origins while celebrating the organization’s future,” Sacramento Kings president of business operations John Rinehart said in a press release.

“We believe our fans will appreciate the modernized Kings script and the return of the popular color scheme.”

Sacramento didn’t stop at regular season, either, revamping their California Classic and Summer League uniforms this offseason.

Led by point guard De’Aaron Fox and big man Domantas Sabonis, Sacramento heads into the season with new threads and a fresh outlook as a franchise after snapping a 17-year postseason drought in 2022-23.

Coyotes match with maroon suits, Arizona belt buckles for NHL Draft https://arizonasports.com/story/3526895/coyotes-match-maroon-suits-belt-buckles-2023-nhl-draft/ https://arizonasports.com/story/3526895/coyotes-match-maroon-suits-belt-buckles-2023-nhl-draft/#respond Wed, 28 Jun 2023 23:32:03 +0000 https://arizonasports.com/?p=3526895

It seems the Arizona Coyotes front office has a tradition on its hands. For the second year in a row, the team’s executives attended the NHL Draft in matching suits, and this year it’s all about maroon.

The Coyotes, led by general manager, Bill Armstrong, walked into the draft in Nashville wearing maroon suits and pants, pink ties and — most boldly — brass belt buckles.

The custom buckle features a classic Coyotes logo painted in color along with red highlights and the team’s name in natural brass that brackets the imagery.

Arizona holds the No. 6 overall pick and the 11th pick via Ottawa.

Last year for a busy draft that included three first-round picks, the Coyotes brass wore matching blue suits and red ties, standing out amongst the crowd before the draft got underway.

Arizona general manager Bill Armstrong said the suit idea came amid a long pre-draft process once the Coyotes arrived in Montreal.

“It was exhausting for us because there were so many scenarios in the first round because of the picks we could get to,” he told reporters. “It was probably the most strenuous draft in terms of lining up everything and making sure you had all your angles covered.

“We were in town early, I think maybe a couple days too early. We had some fun with it. We put our blue suits on there. … I do believe we were just the best-dressed team, but that was just my opinion. I don’t like when everybody wears different colors. So if anybody has complaints, it’s (on) me. We’re a team, we should look like one.”

It appears that a little idea that sprouted out of circumstance has now become a tradition.

Fans around the NBA love draft night because of the mayhem that can ensue with trades and superstars being shipped off to different places.

But a trend dating back to before the athletes getting drafted were born has been players showing up to the venue in an outfit that will make themselves stand out.

Some of the best suits — or worst, whatever camp you may be in — throughout history include Bol Bol in 2019 rocking a Spider Man suit, Samaki Walker in 1996 sporting a cream suit with cream hat or even Drew Gooden in 2005 or Amar’e Stoudemire in 2002.

Kansas star and projected first-round pick Gradey Dick set the tone for Thursday night, showing up in the shiniest red suit you could picture.

“I am from Kansas, Dorothy has her little slippers and I have my Dorothy suit,” Dick told the NBA Twitter account.

The hopeful draftee was sporting a rectangular pair of sunglasses, a new “GD” chain that is the logo of his brand and black dress shoes with red bottoms.

“A little subtle though,” Dick said.

Potential top-three pick Scoot Henderson donned an all-black suit with silver patterns and multi-colored gems throughout.

He also sported a grill on his bottom teeth with yellow, blue, red and green colored gems on his teeth.

What are some of your favorites or least favorites throughout the years of drafting and where does Dick’s rank among them?

Gallen took the mound against the Cleveland Guardians rocking a snake-skin belt to match the D-backs city connect Serpientes jerseys.

It caused quite the rattle on the internet.

Gallen admitted the belt was a little “out of my comfort zone” but it seemed to bring good fortune.

He was able to bounce back from a mediocre outing at Detroit where he gave up five earned runs in 5.2 innings to strike out seven Guardians batters while only allowing one earned run to pick up his eighth win of the year.

Gallen is listed alongside Clayton Kershaw, Spencer Strider and Zack Wheeler as the favorites to win the NL Cy Young Award.

Gallen next takes the mound on Wednesday against the Milwaukee Brewers. He finished fifth place in the voting last season.

The game is scheduled for 11:10 a.m. and can be heard on ESPN 620 AM and 98.7 FM HD-2.

— Cleveland Browns (@Browns) June 12, 2023

The Cleveland Browns released a new logo built around the theme of their fan base, the Dawg Pound.

Traditional orange and brown colors are used to shadow the face of a bulldog with a spiked collar around its neck.

The design has a few hidden features with the shape of Ohio, a guitar pick to represent the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the traditional Browns helmet stripe and eight spikes around the collar to represent the eight times the Browns have finished as NFL champions.

It is not clear when or where the logo will be displayed during Browns games this season.

The logo selected based on a fan vote.

Merchandise including the logo can already be purchased on the the team shop through Fanatics.

AAUGH! D-backs’ Triple-A Reno rocks Peanuts-inspired uniforms https://arizonasports.com/story/3524010/aaugh-d-backs-triple-reno-rocks-peanuts-inspired-uniforms/ https://arizonasports.com/story/3524010/aaugh-d-backs-triple-reno-rocks-peanuts-inspired-uniforms/#respond Sun, 21 May 2023 02:05:15 +0000 https://arizonasports.com/?p=3524010 Charlie Brown, Snoopy and Woodstock were all over the diamond at Greater Nevada Field on Saturday night.

The Reno Aces — the Triple-A affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks — dubbed their matchup with the Sacramento River Cats one for fans to bring out their inner child for Peanuts Night.

Jake McCarthy, Alek Thomas, Buddy Kennedy and starting pitcher Blake Walston donned Peanuts-inspired uniforms to celebrate the beloved cartoon.

Snoopy hung out on the pitcher’s mound while Walston went to work on a strong outing. He allowed one earned run in five frames with four strikeouts in the special uniforms.

The game included Peanuts music, photo opportunities with characters and specialized food items.

Fans could bid for a game-used Peanuts jersey with proceeds going to charity.

Here are the uniforms in action:

Reno has had creative uniform combinations in the past, such as Millennium Falcon Star Wars jerseys and their Copa de la Diversion unis.

Perhaps the Peanuts brought the most out of the players, as the Aces jumped ahead 11-1 in the third inning.

They won Saturday’s matchup 17-3.

Walston has been the team’s ace since Brandon Pfaadt was called up to the majors, and he has had quite the May.

Arizona’s No. 6 prospect has allowed only three earned runs in 18.2 innings pitched this month entering Saturday.

McCarthy and Thomas combined for five hits and six runs scored, while Phillip Evans drove in five runs.

New kicks, who dis? Nike drops new Kyler Murray-inspired all-pink cleats https://arizonasports.com/story/3523926/kyler-murray-inspires-nike-all-pink-cleats/ https://arizonasports.com/story/3523926/kyler-murray-inspires-nike-all-pink-cleats/#respond Fri, 19 May 2023 23:00:26 +0000 https://arizonasports.com/?p=3523926 New kicks. Who dis?

Nike on Friday released the latest edition of the Vapor Edge Pro 360 2 cleats in honor of Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray.

The design of the new spikes was inspired by Murray’s all-pink attire when he was selected No. 1 overall by the Cardinals in the 2019 NFL Draft.

Murray’s fit that night — in which he became the first athlete in history to be drafted in the first round of two sports in the same year — was inspired by “The Roaring 1920’s” and his favorite movie “The Great Gatsby.”

The Oakland Athletics also selected Murray with the No. 9 overall pick in the 2019 MLB Draft.

Unfortunately for Murray and Co., the Cardinals signal caller won’t be able to don his new kicks when the 2023 campaign kicks off, as the fifth-year pro is expected to miss at least the start of the season due to the lengthy rehab process of a torn ACL suffered on Dec. 12.

Arizona currently has five quarterbacks on the roster in Murray, veteran backup Colt McCoy, David Blough, Jeff Driskel and rookie Clayton Tune, who the Cardinals drafted in the fifth round (No. 139 overall) last month.

However, due to an undisclosed injury, McCoy could miss some time in the offseason as well.

Cincinnati Reds release new Nike City Connect uniforms and logo https://arizonasports.com/story/3523418/cincinnati-reds-release-new-city-connect-uniforms-and-logo/ https://arizonasports.com/story/3523418/cincinnati-reds-release-new-city-connect-uniforms-and-logo/#respond Sat, 13 May 2023 22:14:23 +0000 https://arizonasports.com/?p=3523418 The Cincinnati Reds are the newest team to receive their City Connect jerseys on Saturday from Nike.

The City Connect jerseys are meant to represent something unique to the city, as for the Arizona Diamondbacks it says snakes in Spanish (Serpientes).

Cincinnati tweeted out “Repping CINCY for a new generation.”

The jersey is all black with red and white trim around the “Cincy” on the front of the jersey and red trim on the end of the sleeve.

The hat is all black with a new “C” that features many different red lines that meet and form a modern look on the team’s previous logo.

Saturday is the first day the team will don the uniforms on the field.

Cincinnati is now the 18th team to get a City Connect jersey, joining the Diamondbacks, Colorado Rockies, Chicago White Sox, Miami Marlins, Seattle Mariners, Washington Nationals, San Diego Padres, Boston Red Sox, Houston Astros, Texas Rangers, Los Angeles Angels, Milwaukee Brewers, San Francisco Giants, Kansas City Royals, Chicago Cubs, Atlanta Braves and L.A. Dodgers.

Only the Baltimore Orioles, Cleveland Guardians, Detroit Tigers, Minnesota Twins, New York Mets, New York Yankees, Oakland Athletics, Philadelphia Phillies, Pittsburgh Pirates, St. Louis Cardinals, Tampa Bay Rays and Toronto Blue Jays remain without them.

Pittsburgh and Baltimore plan on releasing jerseys later this year.

Charles Barkley predicts big Chris Paul game because of his pregame fit https://arizonasports.com/story/3522340/charles-barkley-predicts-big-chris-paul-game-with-russell-westbrook-fit/ https://arizonasports.com/story/3522340/charles-barkley-predicts-big-chris-paul-game-with-russell-westbrook-fit/#respond Tue, 02 May 2023 01:48:59 +0000 https://arizonasports.com/?p=3522340 Before departing with an injured groin in a Game 2 loss to the Denver Nuggets, Chris Paul walked into Ball Arena donning nothing overly flashy by his standards.

But the Phoenix Suns guard did pull a little style similar to recently eliminated Los Angeles Clippers star Russell Westbrook: Backwards hat, sunglasses, low-cut shirt with a chain.

So if you wanted to trust Charles Barkley’s regular FanDuel Sportsbook segment on TNT this Monday night, you should’ve been warned: His analysis of how Paul will do will be weighted heavily by Paul’s attire.

“Oh, Chris Paul think he Russell Westbrook tonight. He gonna have a good game!” Barkley said as the pregame show went to break.

(As an aside, a wild Arizona Sports co-host Dan Bickley appeared to not be dressing like Westbrook as he walked behind Paul at Ball Arena.)

We get it. Westbrook typically goes one shirt over another, and oftentimes one shirt over nothing.

At about the same time Monday evening, Westbrook was walking on the Met Gala red carpet wearing this:

For reference, here’s how Westbrook’s fashion trends went during the Clippers’ series against the Suns.

Paul gave it a good effort — as did Bick — but nobody quite does fashion like Westbrook.

The rest of Paul’s night didn’t go so cleanly. He left in the third quarter after scoring eight points to go with six assists as the Suns fell 97-87.
